SERENITY STATION
San Luis Obispo, CA
Firehouse/Library
Square Footage: 5000 SF
Fire stations and libraries have some of the most polarizing programmatic requirements of all civic buildings. Their contrasts in speed, size, demographics, and especially sound usually push each other far from being located on the same road. However in a city full of retirees and college students, young families and children lack a place for education other than at home or school. Serenity station attempts to tackle the issue by reimagining what a fire station and a library could be like not only on the same road, but on the same site. By examining the edges of the site, city, and community, Serenity station takes influence straight from the direction of sound on the site and uses it to create a building in which community can flourish. With modern day libraries transitioning to become a gathering space and international fire stations being used as more than a utility space, the intersection of the program lends itself more clearly to connection than separation.
